During the holidays you may have added guests and kitchen activity. You can prevent potential upsets and disasters by following these few simple measures:
Kitchen Tips
Don’t pour grease, oil, or fat down the drain. Instead, let it cool, then scrape it into a container and dispose of it in the trash.
Use a sink strainer to catch food debris and prevent clogs. Run cold water while using the disposal to help solidify grease and flush it away.
Feed scraps gradually into the disposal to prevent jams. Avoid putting fibrous, starchy, or hard items like celery, potato peels, pasta, rice, or bones into the garbage disposal.
Bathroom Tips
Stagger shower times to allow your water heater and drains to catch up, especially with multiple guests.
Place wastebaskets, preferable with lids, in the bathroom to discourage guests from flushing items like wipes, cotton swabs, or feminine hygiene products. Install drain covers in the shower to catch hair and prevent clogs.
General Plumbing Tips
Check for leaks under sinks or around toilets, and ensure everything is functioning properly.
Know where your water shut off valves are located in case of a leak so that you can shut the water off quickly.
